Prof Man-Fung Yuen

Professor Yuen currently serves as Chair Professor at The University of Hong Kong and holds the Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation Professorship in Medicine. He is also Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong. After earning his MBBS in 1992, Professor Yuen pursued further academic distinction, obtaining three doctoral degrees: Doctor of Medicine (awarded the Sir Patrick Manson Gold Medal, 2001), Doctor of Philosophy (2005), and Doctor of Science (2017).

Professor Yuen is internationally recognised for his work on chronic hepatitis B and hepatocellular carcinoma. His research spans disease prevention, natural history, virology, serology, and therapeutic development. Professor Yuen has published over 660 research articles in many medical journals, including the most prestigious ones e.g., New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet and its specialty journals, Nature Medicine, Nature Review Disease Primers, Nature Review Gastroenterology and Hepatology and top Gastroenterology and Hepatology Journals. Of all these publications, he has served as the lead author on 10 seminal and original articles published in New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Lancet Infectious Diseases and Nature Medicine. He has been invited to deliver more than 380 lectures worldwide.

Currently, Professor Yuen leads numerous international clinical trials investigating new antiviral and immunomodulatory therapies for chronic hepatitis B. He is also serving as a consultant and scientific advisor for many international pharmaceutical and biotech companies for developing novel agents for hepatitis B disease. In addition, he is at the forefront of research into novel biomarkers for overt and occult hepatitis B infection. His expertise is sought by several international coalitions, including the International Coalition to Eliminate HBV (ICE-HEP) and the Coalition to Eradicate Viral Hepatitis in Asia Pacific (CEVHAP). He is a member of the Asia Pacific Liver Disease Alliance and serves on the Advisory Council of The Hepatitis Fund, a Swiss-based foundation.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Professor Yuen was awarded the “Bruce Witte Distinguished Scholar” in November 2025 from the Hepatitis B Foundation – Baruch S. Blumberg Institute, a world-renowned institute dedicated to Dr. Blumberg, the Nobel laureate for the discovery of hepatitis B virus.
