Dr Prarthana Thiagarajan

Monash Health, VIC

Dr Prarthana Thiagarajan (PT) is a Consultant Hepatologist and Endoscopist at Monash Health, Melbourne, whose clinical interests include portal hypertension, endohepatology, decompensated liver disease and liver transplantation.

Following gastroenterology and hepatology training in the United Kingdom, including an Advanced Fellowship in Transplant Hepatology at the Birmingham Liver Unit, she completed a PhD at the University of Nottingham investigating the muscle-liver axis and metabolic interventions in MASLD. She was appointed as a Consultant Hepatologist at Nottingham University Hospitals in 2022, where she helped establish the region's endohepatology program, developed specialist outreach liver services for rural communities, and worked closely with the Cambridge Liver Unit to deliver joint transplant clinics across the East Midlands.

In 2025, she moved to Melbourne and joined Monash Health with the perhaps optimistic aim of achieving a better work-life balance. Instead, she found a fantastic opportunity to help shape and expand advanced hepatology services across one of Australia's largest health networks. Her current work focuses on integrating endohepatology into routine practice through EUS-guided liver biopsy, portal pressure assessment and advanced variceal therapies, with the aim of delivering safer, more streamlined and patient-centred liver care. She contributes to the Complex Liver, Viral Hepatitis and Autoimmune Liver Clinics, as well as providing inpatient Hepatology, Fibroscan and Acute GI bleed services. In parallel, she is developing a pilot peri-operative liver pathway to improve the identification and management of patients with chronic liver disease undergoing surgery.

PT has held multiple leadership and educational roles throughout her career and remains passionate about mentorship, research, service development and the occasional good idea that survives contact with hospital bureaucracy.

Outside medicine, she enjoys reading, cycling, scuba diving, travelling to questionably safe destinations, and - most importantly -  raising two t(w)eenage sons. These experiences that have taught her that curiosity is essential, humility is inevitable, and successful negotiation is largely a matter of timing.
